| Well, the ancient proverbs are numbered in their thousands in Highland Gaelic alone, and although the quotes are hard to find because the culture was never written down except by outsiders they make good reading. But ignore Gaelic culture, that's my list! What are your favourite quotes and sayings throughout history?
Mine are:
'Some people make things happen, some people watch things happen, and others wonder what has happened' - Gaelic proverb
'Walking in the footsteps of your ancestors is to keep your descendants in line' - Iain mac Aonghais MacDhòmhnaill
'The ancient proprietors of the soil shall give peace to strange merchant proprietors, and the whole Highlands will become one huge deer forest; the whole country will be so utterly desolated and depopulated that the crow of a cock shall not be heard north of Druim-Uachdair; the people will emigrate to Islands now unknown, but which shall yet be discovered in the boundless oceans, after which the deer and other wild animals in the huge wilderness shall be exterminated and drowned by horrid black rains. The people will then return and take undisturbed possession of the lands of their ancestors' - Coinneach Odhar, the Brahan Seer
'Sons of Conn remember, hardihood in times of strife' - the sennachie at the Battle of Harlaw
'Brave sons of Alba, Gall and Gael alike, we can wash our wounds with our moral victory. We are not, and never will be, Scots' - Aonghais Og | |
